जीवन नय्या नय्या बहती जाये / jeevan nayyaa bahatee jaaye

Now that I've picked up learning Hindi again, I've decided to try to breathe some life into this sleeping beauty. I'm very open to suggestions for how to do it. For now, I thought I'd start with a simple introductory question for all who care to answer it:
आप कब से हिंदी सीख रहे हैं?
ap kab se hindee seekh rahe hain?

Hm, i don't know the proper way to reply, but since I was 17! 21 now, still pretty elementary in my knowledge. much better at listening/reading than talking (not odd considering i'm teaching myself)
I've been picking up bits and pieces for years and years, but I took my first formal class last fall.
मैं हिंदी तीन सालों से सीख रहा हूँ, और आप? :)
अंत में, कोई जो लिख सकते हैं! मैं दो-एक हफ़तों से ही सीख रहा हूँ.
आ, बढ़िया! हमको Linguaphiles से जानते हैं -- आपने कहा कि पंजाबी बोल सकते हैं, है न? आपकी मदद बहुत करती होगा!

For about 3 years now. I'm trying to learn as much as I can, but am still shy about speaking.
it's strange. I've never formally trained in hindi, being a gujarati speaker, but due to my religious habits and listening to my guru Morari Bapu, i've learned how to read it (especially in religious texts like the ramcharit manas) and understand it fluently. However, when i reply, it's always in gujarati.

I'm curious how different the two languages really are. How would you ask the question in Gujarati?
aap kyaare thi hindi seekhyu chhe?
kyaare is equivalent to kab , seekhyu is seek raha, chhe is hain.

Alternatively, ketla varso thi seekhyu chhe? meaning, how many years have you studied? Varso is years, ketla is how many.

To my ears, gujarati sounds like ghetto slang hindi. It's funny--gujarati speakers have a very easy time understanding hindi, but the vice versa is not as true. But gujarati has more borrowed vocabulary from persian and elsewhere than hindi does, so it may be that.

but overall, they're rather similar, if you know what to listen for. For instance, "It Seems to Me" in hindi is Mujse lakti hain, vs Gujarati's Mane laage chhe. Chhe is the gujarati standard copula verb.

what does this mean?
aap kab se hindee seekh rahe hain
self when from Hindi learn stay-M.PL.PRS be-PL.PRS
"How long have you [formal] been learning Hindi?"
मैं अपि सीख तीन सालों से सीख रहा हूँ, हालाँकि मुझे हिंदी अच्छी तरह से बात नहीं कर सकता!!
so what are you using to study hindi?
Right now, McGregor's Outline of Hindi grammar and Teach yourself Urdu. I also have my hands on a copy of Shapiro's Primer of modern standard Hindi, though I'm not sure how much use I'll make of that.
